by: Kav LaOved Migrant worker, abused and then arrested, files for damages
The worker, who held a legal work permit, was employed in fieldwork. An inspection of the farm’s Thai workers conditions by Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labor found living conditions inhumane. As a result the employer's license was suspended and migrant workers evacuated immediately. The workers, all possessing legal work permits, were evacuated to the Ben Gurion Airport Prison. While most male workers were gradually released from prison and given alternative employment, the female worker under discussion was told, after nine days in custody, that she would be deported to Thailand. Following an urgent petition submitted by Kav LaOved the deportation was canceled and the worker was released from custody. The Human Rights Legal Education Clinic in Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law is now filing a damages lawsuit against the State for unlawful arrest.
